1. Departments need to carefully review the purpose of setting any section restriction. What is the goal of the restriction? Is it necessary or for convenience? How will your department maintain the restriction over time?
2. Important considerations
a. Sections are maintained individually by CRN on three separate Banner forms
b. The last restrictions placed on the section at term roll will be in effect at the beginning of the next like term. Therefore, restrictions will need to be updated prior to registration.
c. There is no control by DATE
d. There is no ability to prevent students from dropping
3. Any section restrictions are subject to College review and approval
4. It is possible for any restriction to be overridden by trained staff member, so that affected students may register. (SAAO 124, “College/Dept. Registration Permit Override Maintenance”).
5. Restrictions may be entered in Banner only by approved Schedule Maintainers. Requests to FMS may be submitted only by approved Schedule Maintainers.
6. Specific registration restriction instructions:
a. Approval Required --This is similar to “authorization only” in UI Direct. Generally, the “Department Approval Required” would be implemented because departmental personnel would be contacted to authorize student registration problems. Sometimes students would contact the instructor to make study arrangements prior to registration and, in that case, “Instructor approval required” would be used.
b. Restrict by General Student Information-Typically it is best to include, rather than exclude any group of students. Also, the fewer categories, the better. You do not have to fill out something in each category but if you do there is an OR relationship between any two lines in one category, and an AND relationship between categories. You should know the Banner notation for each category and be knowledgeable of the Program codes associated with your unit(s).
c. Reserve Seats for Certain Students: class, level, and major are the only categories by which seats can be reserved. DO NOT use reserved seats if adjustments will be made in the Maximum Enrollment field—these two strategies cannot be combined! If seats are needed for other student groups, a separate section must be set up and cross-listed. Contact FMS to obtain a “meets with” cross-list indicator. There is no override for reserved seats.
d. Section Restriction by General Student Attribute-these restrictions are useful when an entire section is affected and will restrict registration to students having this attribute on their record.
7. In Banner, undergraduates and graduates who enroll in the same course with differential credit will enroll in different sections. It is necessary to restrict enrollment to the appropriate group of students so that proper credit and billing will occur. (If three hours credit for undergraduates, then restrict section to include only undergraduates. Therefore, graduate students could not enroll).
