Preparing for Registration

Now that the Spring 2005 Class Schedule has been published online, it is time to change gears and begin thinking about registration (Nov. 1, 2004). This includes Registration Restrictions, Pending Sections, Linked and Crosslisted Section Setups.

Registration Restrictions ACTION NEEDED

Our office did not enter any Registration Restrictions for Spring 2005. You need to look at your course controls in UI Direct in Spring 2004 and determine how you will be able to use restrictions for Spring 2005, then enter them into BANNER on the appropriate forms. Information from the PowerPoint presentation given by Carol Malmgren in early Spring can be found here.

Be aware that when Banner checks for restrictions, it does so in the following order:

SSAPREQ - CAPP Area Restrictions (i.e., Discovery, Honors)

SSARRES - Program Restrictions (i.e., Class, Level, Program)

SSASECT - Approval Code (special approval needed)

SSASECT - Enrollment Block, Reserved Seats (seats for certain populations), if used. Reminder: Reserved Seats cannot be overridden, you must adjust the number of seats to get additional students into any full category.

The "AND" relationship looks different when using exclude restrictions. In the below example, if both restrictions are "include" restrictions, then there is no difference:

Include students with major 0115 and include students with level 1G will leave you students who are (both) major 0115 and level 1G, excluding all others. The And relationship creates a smaller include group

And most training examples were versions of "include" restrictions (since we have discouraged the use of exclude restrictions).

We have discovered a change in how the 'AND' relationship works on SSARRES when using "exclude" restrictions:

"Excluding" students with a given major AND excluding students with a given level does not only exclude students with the major and level, it excludes all students with the major and all students with the level. instead of the "AND" creating a smaller group, the "AND" relationship in excluding creates a bigger group of excluded students.

Linked, Crosslisted and Pended Sections ACTION NEEDED

In order to make sure all Linked Sections are set up correctly, you MUST run the Linked Error Report in EDDIE. Make sure the Link ID and Link Connectors are set up properly. Also, the Gradable section has to carry the credit hours. The non-graded section should be listed as zero. If zero is not an option, contact our office to set it up at the catalog level.

You MUST also run the Scheduled Section Tally Report in EDDIE to check crosslisted sections. Make sure that there are identical sections for all approved crosslisted courses. For the 400-level sections with differential credit for undergrads and grads, you MUST make sure the credit value is listed in the credit and billing fields on the Section Information Block AND the session credit on the Meeting Time Block of SSASECT.

Because departments can no longer add or drop students, now is the time to Pend sections that may not need to be taught. You can do this by changing the status on SSASECT to P. This will avoid moving students if enrollments are low in these sections.

Full Term, 1st Eight-Week and 2nd Eight-Week Sections

The part of term affects when a student can register. To avoid registration problems, if your department is offering sections that are taught in either the 1st or 2nd Eight weeks, they need to be set up correctly. Once a student registers in a section the part of term cannot be changed. In order to change the part of term on SSASECT you must do the following steps:

1. Delete the instructor, if listed.

2. Delete the meeting record, using the Red X.

3. On the Section Information Block of SSASECT, change the Part/Term from 1 to A (1st 8 weeks) or B (2nd 8 Weeks).

If you have any problems doing this, contact our office.
