Cross Listed Sections II

Linking

1. When multiple components are required to be registered for a course, link the different schedule types together. The coding scheme for the Link Identifiers, Link Connectors and Section IDs can be found in the SACS 203: Linking and Packaging Sections Manual, Topic 3.3, pg. 45. It was also on a handout given during the training session.

2. The Section ID MUST not be changed from what FMS set up if the section is linked. The error message students receive is very cryptic so we have incorporated the Linking Scheme into the Section ID to help students with their registration.

3. When linking sections in Banner, one component needs to carry the credit and be gradable. If you do not want the schedule type that is currently listed to carry the credit and be graded for Spring 2005, you need to change the credit and billing on the first block of SSASECT and also the session credit on the Meeting Block. You also need to check or uncheck the gradable box. Whichever section is gradable has to carry the credit.

Grade Modes

If you specify a grade mode on the section it will be effective for ALL students in the section. If you have a specific student that has signed an Honor's Learning Agreement for Honors credit, the registration status will need to be changed to RH on the Student's record by a College COAR user on SFAREGS. If the course is a 400-level course, it may need the Honors Grade Mode added. In either case, the college should contact FMS and we'll add the Honors grade mode at the course level.

Independent Study Sections

1. Each course may have only ONE IND section per instructor. Do not use Faculty Independent Study CRNs to teach a 'class' section of the course. These sections with the IND schedule type are set up for one-on-one individual instruction and were built in order to keep the same CRN for each term. If you want to offer a class under the course, you should add a section with a schedule type of something other than IND, e.g. CNF.

2. In order to reuse Inactive Independent Study Sections, you should search on SSASECQ for the Subj/Course Number/Status = I/Sched Type = IND. If you have reactivated any sections for Fall, you also need to make the changes to the Section ID and Instructor name for Spring 2005 and Summer 2005 for the same CRN.

400-Level Undergrad/Grad Variable Credit Sections

1. If a course is offered for both undergrad and grad credit, you have to offer a section for both levels. If a 400-level course is offered for different credit for undergrads and grads, set up a section for each credit/class. For example, if a class is offered for 3 undergrad hours and 4 grad hours, set up a section for 3 hours and restrict to undergrads (on SSARRES) and one section for 4 hours restricted to grads. Send an email to our office to assign an appropriate crosslist identifier for these sections to meet together.

2. For those 400-level courses that are linked and have variable credit values, we may have to look at packaging these sections. Please contact FMS to discuss this option.

Room Assignments

1. For Spring 2005, only schedule sections in rooms that your unit is allocated. FMS is still in the process of assigning rooms for the term and hopes to have them complete by next week. If you need any special type of room, please email me the request along with the CRN. If you have already done so, I still have it in my request file.

2. You should no longer schedule rooms based on the extended capacity that was listed in UI Direct. There is only one capacity listed in the Banner system. You can see the room capacity by double clicking in the room field on the Meeting Block, enter the building code and execute the query (F8). This will give you all rooms in the building. If you have a specific room, just type the bldg code and room and execute.

3. You can see the schedule of a room on SSAMATX. This form lists both Fall and Spring room schedules. In order to just see Spring 2005, enter Bldg Code, Room and tab to the Term field and type 120051 and execute. This will show only those sections for Spring 2005 in that room.

Overrides

When assigning rooms and instructors for crosslisted sections, you will need to put an O(letter) in the Override fields on both the Meeting Block and Instructor block (for each instructor).
